School Programs Manager

Red Butte Garden and Arboretum seeks a full-time SchoolPrograms Manager to handle all aspects of our K-12 education programs including: a statewide outreach program; on-site field trips; managing,purchasing, and tracking educational supplies; evaluation, refining, anddeveloping K-12 curricula; and selecting, training, and managing seasonaleducation staff. The position reports to the Director of Programs and workscollaboratively with other staff members throughout the Garden.

Red Butte Garden, a part of the University of Utah, is anon-profit organization located in Salt Lake City, Utah. With over 100 acresincluding display and natural gardens, walking paths and natural areas withhiking trails, Red Butte Garden is the largest botanical garden in theIntermountain West that tests, displays, and interprets regional horticulture.

Primary Responsibilities:

Statewide Outreach Program: The Grow Lab Program reaches every district in the state of Utah and serves some 4,000 students annually. Duties include: recruiting and scheduling teachers, conducting eight teacher workshops, overseeing inventory of supplies and budget, and traveling to classrooms across the state to teach the program’s first lesson.

On-Site Field Trips: This popular program is developed primarily for K-4 students and teachers and provides a two-hour hand-on tour to some 10,000 school children annually. The program is free to public and charter schools in the State of Utah. Title 1 schools receive additional resources that include instruction by Red Butte Garden staff before and after the field trip. Duties include: scheduling class visits, assembling and mailing pre- and post-visit materials, scheduling volunteers and staff teachers, overseeing Title 1 program and scheduling visits to schools, greeting school groups and overseeing budget.

Educational Supplies: Duties include: purchasing supplies as needed, often weekly, for educational programs; inventory current supplies and maintain storage area.

Curriculum Development: Duties include: updating and modifying curriculum and activities as needed and in keeping with the state science core curriculum for each grade level.

Staff Management: Duties include: hiring, training, retaining and co-supervising a seasonal staff of 6-8 seasonal positions that serve as educators for field classes and summer camps, as well as fill other program related duties.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Horticulture, Botany, Biology, Education, or Environmental StudiesFirm commitment to Red Butte Garden’s mission of connecting people to living landscapesOutstanding written and oral communication skillsExperience and skill teaching or providing educational programming to elementary-aged studentsStrong organizational skills and experience in managing multi-faceted projectsAbility to travel throughout the State of UtahFlexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends
