The quintessential New Orleans pianist, Allen Toussaint helped define the Crescent City's unique brand of R&B while creating its swampy Funk sound. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Allen Toussaint has worn the hat of producer, songwriter, arranger, session pianist, and solo artist over the course of his lengthy and prolific career. Toussaint's contributions go beyond New Orleans music deep into the idioms of R&B, pop, blues and jazz. From Boogie-Woogie and jazz to ballads and blues, Toussaint plays them all amidst crafty horn arrangements, laying out the rhythm section with complex dialogues he makes sound easy.
Legendary New Orleans jazz combo The Dirty Dozen Brass Band successfully mixes together R&B, funk, and bebop into the traditional New Orleans style with the instrumentation of a brass band. The group revitalized the brass band tradition, opening up the repertoire and inspiring some younger groups to imitate its boldness. Beefy Soul Jazz for those who prefer their jazz charmingly contorted.
New Orleans singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and all-around musical powerhouse Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews is only 24, but he's already a veteran live performer with a history that stretches back two decades.
