An illustrated lecture on the genus of Phlox. The lecture will be followed by a reception, book signing and light refreshments. This is a co-sponsored event by the Wasatch Rock Garden Society, the North American Rock Garden Society and Red Butte Garden.
Your grandmother most likely grew great swathes of Phlox paniculata in brilliant shades of pinks and purples in her perennial border garden, but have you discovered Phlox hoodii , a bright white Utah native of much smaller and tighter stature and well suited to our hot and dry climate? Come and enjoy a veritable feast of phloxes as James Locklear provides an overview of the phloxes you may have never known existed.
A plant expert from Lincoln, Nebraska and a former director of the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains in Kansas and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, Mr. Locklear is currently director of conservation for Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha. His book Phlox: A Natural History and Gardener's Guide was published by Timber Press in March 2011 and has been well received by the gardening community, filling a void on this well loved plant. Join us for a pleasant evening of "plant talk" and get inspired for the gardening season that is not all that far away.
