Picnic Policy

Due to limited space and facilities, Red Butte Garden requests that guests adhere to the following when planning a picnic in the Garden.

All Groups

  • Keep in mind that we are a botanical garden, not a park. To preserve our gardens and collections, sporting games and cooking of food are not allowed. We are not able to store or refrigerate any food.
  • Please pack up and remove all garbage and food materials out of the Garden.
  • Please do not move any of the tables, chairs or benches that are located throughout the Garden.
  • The Amphitheatre, Rose Garden, and Fragrance Garden are used as rental facilities and are open to group picnics on a space available basis only. Groups picnicking in these areas may have to relocate in order to accommodate scheduled private rentals.
  • Use of the Children's Garden for Birthday parties/Picnics requires a reservation; these pre-registered birthday parties have preferential use of Children's Garden facilities.

Groups of 1-10

  • No reservations are required.
  • Visitors may picnic anywhere in the Garden on a space available basis.
  • Table seating is limited to the Courtyard, wayside rests, and creekside picnic area.
  • Other areas offer bench or lawn seating.

Groups of 11-34

  • No reservations are required.
  • The Four Seasons lawn or lawn areas east of the Water Pavilion are recommended.

Groups of 35 or More

  • Reservations, fees, and damage deposit are required.

School Groups

  • School groups are not permitted to picnic in the Garden.
  • Red Butte Garden program staff will provide school groups with a list of local parks for picnics.

GUIDED TOURS

  • Schedule a private tour with one of our Garden Docents to experience Red Butte Garden’s best! These knowledgeable Docents will guide you through the formal Garden as they educate you and your group on the wonderful history, award winning designs, views and beautifully diverse plants and scents found throughout Red Butte Garden.
  • In addition to the formal garden consider a tour of the Red Butte Garden 77 acre Natural Area and learn about the diversity of native plants and animals which thrive along our foothills.
  • Perfect for tourists, garden clubs, church groups, youth groups, community organizations and more.
  • $20 fee for each docent lead tour.
  • Private Walking Tours typically last 1.5 hours and include up to 2 miles of walking. These tours can accommodate up to 15 people.
    Private Tram Tours typically last 1 hour and may accommodate 7 people.
