Budding Beginnings
Submitted: March 11, 2025, 2:21 p.m.
Spring is just around the corner and the Garden is awakening with these first glimpses of color and life.

George Reticulated Iris (Iris reticulata 'George')
The reticulated irises in the Rose Garden are beginning to pop up among the roses.

Chaparral Arizona Cypress (Cupressus arizonica var. glabra 'Chaparral')
While you may not have noticed, but your allergies might have...these small structures are the pollen cones of this Arizona Cypress. They have been releasing pollen for about a week.

Daffodil (Narcissus cv.)
The first of many daffodils have also started poking their heads up.

Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis)
One of the earliest bloomers at Red Butte, snowdrops will often begin blooming when there is still snow in many parts of the Garden.

Primavera Witch Hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia 'Primavera')
Blooming before it leafs out, witch hazels produce flowers with four delicate petals.

Amethyst Witch Hazel (Hamamelis vernalis 'Amethyst')
You can find our witch hazels in the Fragrance Garden, Fern Gully, and in the Courtyard.

Winter Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum)
A relative of lilacs and olives, winter jasmine looks great as a ground cover or cascading over rock walls.

Hardy Cyclamen (Cyclamen coum)
Last but not least, our cyclamens have started peeking out in the upper Floral Walk.
As we continue warming up, more and more will begin to bloom. Don't miss our earliest bloomers. Come to the Garden today!
